Wanted to share one of my projects

Hi all,

How is eveybody? Looks like it’s kinda quiet on the forum
So i wanted to share what i’ve been busy with the past few months and hopefully spark some responses/questions.

New Router
After a long time struggling with a fritzbox router that is uncapable of handling large volume traffic of small UDP packets i’ve decided to bit the bullet and get myself a professional opnsense router.

It is a Deciso dec3840 which i bought from ebay and had it’s SSD and memory removed (can you believe it?). Equipped with a 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB and an AMD EPYC 3101 (4 cores) it’s quite an upgrade from a cunsomer-grade router. Also decided to get rid of the fiber NTU and replace that with an SFP module plugged directly in the router.

Had to learn myself opnsense (not a very hard thing), but now i have it working. I’m happy!
It can do the 800Kb of NTP traffic (4x IPv6-only NTP servers) at 3GBit setting easily.

Besides this the ability to control DNS, DHCP, Intrusion detection and filtering is a relief!
What kind of router/box are you running?

New Timeserver
Kindly someone sent me an awesome NTP appliance: a second hand Meinberg M600.
Its working great and I am thinking where and how to deploy it. Since i already have 4 Meinberg time servers, it’s getting crowded in the rack…

I’m running pfSense on an old HP laptop(~2012 probably), hooked up to TP-Link TL-SG105E switches for VLANs. Got my homelab VMs on a separate VLAN and stuff, so regular LAN can reach the VMs, but not the other way around, for the most part.
My flat is just a sectioned off part of the landlord’s house with a separate entrance, and I’m using the landlord’s internet (for free, might I add!), which means I’m behind another router that I don’t control. So, I got myself a VPN with public IP
That said, while I do have NTP running locally (stratum 1 until recently, until robot vacuum found the GPS module), and UDP port 123 open, my home setup isn’t participating in the pool.
