Monitor in South America?

What is required to run a monitor in South America and are there any plans for that?

I offered @ask one over a year ago, but, after showing initial interest, he stopped responding. Needless to say that I’m quite disappointed at the way that he runs this project, by repeatedly ignoring and refusing help to improve the quality of the service.

It requires to run a stable NTP-server for some time.
Then ask Ask to add you.

Ask (yes his name) is not planning anything, you have to run a stable ntp-server and have enough knowledge about ntp and ntp-pool to be accepted.

However, why do you ask after a monitor in South-America? There is not really a need for a monitor in a part of the world, when monitors monitor it just fine.
As monitors are checked on their internet connections too, if they have fast peers, they can be selected.

It really doesn’t matter if your ntp-server is being checked from Europe or North-America, it will be listed if working correctly.

The question is: Why you are asking this?

Is there a problem that the monitors keep you from being in the pool?
Is this a problem all over South-America or just you?

If there is no problem, then there is no need to add monitors.
If there is a general problem in South-America, then yes, it may need an extra monitor there.

Ergo, is there a problem?

Always great to keep things distributed. Networks (BGP) in US/EU are very incomparable to AF/SA - alone geographically/physically speaking.

I’m of the opinion that it would be beneficial to have at least one monitoring node per continent. Africa and South America are lacking in this regard, while other zones probably have enough monitoring nodes at the moment.

A monitoring node would need to have stable time and have good network connectivity to NTP servers in the area.

As for the procedure for adding a new monitoring node, I don’t think there is a publicly defined procedure at the moment. I would suggest emailing server-owner-help@ntppool.org and/or DMing Ask here on the forum with your proposal. If/when emailing to server-owner-help, please include in your message your username on this forum. Do note that it may take a significant amount of time to get a reply from either contact channel.
