High request rates from Nixie Clocks(?)

Hobbyists have used Nixie tubes in clock projects for several years. Some of these projects use the NTP protocol to set clock time. One sometimes sees the NTP request’s reference ID set to 1N14; this may indicate that the client is a Nixie clock.

A few Nixie clocks are polling at 50-90 requests/second, many time the normal rate. Has anyone else noticed such behavior?

It seems this reference ID is used by the official arduino NTP client library and there already is a request to increase the default poll interval of 60 seconds. The interval is configurable in milliseconds, but there is no enforced minimum, so in theory it could do 1000 requests per second.
